About the Job
The Assistant Accounting Officer will support effective financial management at the lodge by ensuring accurate accounting records, strong internal controls, timely reporting, and safeguarding of company assets. The role also supports management and staff to maintain financial integrity and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Ensure correct authorization and allocation of business expenditure
- Independently review and question proposed expenditures for reasonableness and market value
- Record financial transactions accurately on PanStrat or manual systems on a daily basis
- Prepare supplier payment requests
- Interpret and analyze management accounts
- Assist with payroll preparation and reconciliations
- Resolve general ledger and balance sheet reconciliation queries
- Manage and update stock sheets
Reporting and Budgeting
- Meet strict and non-negotiable finance deadlines
- Provide timely feedback on management accounts to the Regional Finance Manager
- Drive monthly finance meetings and communicate outcomes to the Regional Finance Manager
- Assist in compiling budgets and quarterly forecasts
- Support lodge managers and directors with financial queries
- Assist with year-end audit processes
- Reconcile clearing accounts and inter-lodge transactions
- Supervise finance reports to ensure compliance with expected outputs
Internal Controls & Asset Safeguarding
- Maintain strong internal control environments and safeguard company assets
- Maintain stock control procedures and assist with month-end stock takes
- Update and monitor internal controls and conduct documented internal audits and spot checks
- Practice professional scepticism in daily operations
- Investigate and report any suspected losses or internal control breaches immediately
- Ensure company assets are properly recorded, safeguarded, and maintained
- Take full responsibility for petty cash, mobile wallets, and company bank accounts
- Perform regular audits on safari shop systems and processes
- Ensure accurate documentation is maintained
Training
- Assist and train staff on PanStrat systems
- Train lodge staff in basic accounting principles
- Review and train Front of House systems
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
- CPA qualification or active CPA progression is an added advantage
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ practical experience in accounting or finance
- Experience in hospitality, lodge, or operational environments is preferred
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial controls, and transactional processes
- Computer literate with strong Microsoft Excel skills
- Experience with PanStrat or similar hospitality accounting systems is an advantage
- Fluent in English and Swahili (written and spoken)
