Job Summary

The Country Accountant manages general ledger accounts, trial balances, balance sheet reconciliations, month-end/year-end closes, and oversees accounts payable and receivable. The role ensures full compliance with Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) regulations, acts as the primary focal point for annual external audits under NBAA standards, handles treasury management, FX exposure, and stock control governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Operations & Ledger Management: Manage general ledger accounts, ensure IFRS compliance, maintain trial balances, perform balance sheet reconciliations, oversee AP/AR, handle vendor payments, bank reconciliations, and petty cash reviews.
  • Tax Compliance & Statutory Filings: Ensure full compliance with TRA regulations, prepare and file VAT returns via EFD/VFD, compute and file WHT, oversee monthly PAYE computations, and manage statutory deductions (NSSF, WCF, SDL).
  • External Audit & Local Governance: Serve as the primary focal point for annual external audits, prepare audit schedules, assemble transactional backing evidence, resolve audit queries, and facilitate local tax audits with TRA.
  • Cash Flow, Treasury & Stock Control: Prepare rolling cash flow forecasts, manage TZS/USD FX exposure in line with Bank of Tanzania (BOT) regulations, monitor working capital, and govern inventory levels and customs documentation.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education & Professional Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, alongside a CPA (Tanzania) qualification and active registration with the NBAA (CPPP or CPA).
  • Experience: 4 to 6 years of progressive accounting experience in Tanzania across multinational corporate environments and tax/audit firms.
  • Tax & Systems Knowledge: Strong practical knowledge of Tanzanian tax laws, TRA electronic platforms (EFD/VFD), and modern ERP environments (such as Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP, NetSuite, or QuickBooks).
  • Languages: Professional fluency in English and Swahili (written and spoken).
  • Attributes: High integrity, disciplined, structured, analytical mindset, proactive problem-solving, and capability to prioritize under tight deadlines.
