Job Summary

The Legal Officer is responsible for offering legal counsel, coordinating the operations of external advocates, conducting negotiations to ensure settlement of third-party claims, and managing recoveries on behalf of the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Litigation Management: Receive summons, determine liability, appoint service providers, review legal claims, engage in out-of-court negotiations, instruct external lawyers, review judgments, and manage third-party recoveries.
  • Policy Development and Advisory: Review internal policies and procedures for statutory and regulatory compliance, help management interpret laws, conduct legal research, and monitor regulatory changes.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Support management in identifying and mitigating legal risks, liaise with departments, respond to Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) matters, and assist with board and executive meeting reports.
  • Operations: Provide leadership and training to legal department staff, maintain documentation and legal databases, and conduct biannual reviews of outstanding liability claims.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from a recognized institution and Higher Diplomas in Law, Military Science and Security.
  • Professional Certification: Certified Public Secretary (CPS) with a valid and current Practicing Certificate.
  • Admissions: Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid and current practicing certificate and a registered member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of legal practice experience in an insurance or financial institution, with background in Commercial Law, Litigation, and Conveyance.
